Tehran and Riyadh Unite: Strengthening Cultural and Tourism Connections for a Brighter Future
In a promising development for regional relations, Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, Reza Salehi-Amiri, highlighted the role of tourism in strengthening ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia. This statement came during the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly held in Riyadh, where he extended an invitation to Saudi Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb to participate in the upcoming Tehran International Tourism Exhibition.
During his address, Salehi-Amiri emphasized Iran’s readiness to engage in collaborative cultural and tourism initiatives with Saudi Arabia, particularly focusing on the rich realms of heritage, handicrafts, and religious tourism. According to reports from IRNA, he stated:
“We believe that tourism can deepen the connection between the peoples of Iran and Saudi Arabia. Our people are eager to visit Mecca and Medina, while Saudis are interested in discovering Iran’s natural and pilgrimage attractions.”
Salehi-Amiri underscored the significance of the Tehran International Tourism Exhibition, labeling it as the largest tourism event in the region. He described it as a prime opportunity for both nations to showcase their cultural and economic strengths and to enhance cooperation within their tourism sectors.
Furthermore, he pointed out that West Asia is home to some of the world’s richest cultural and historical heritages, yet its share of global tourism revenue remains limited. He stated:
“Iran-Saudi cooperation could serve as a driving force to attract international visitors and promote Islamic culture globally.”
In light of the positive trends in bilateral relations, Salehi-Amiri reiterated Iran’s commitment to strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia, describing it as “firm and clear.” He referenced two significant recent developments:
- The meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Doha.
- The visit of the Saudi defense minister to Tehran.
In response, Saudi Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb expressed gratitude for Iran’s proactive participation in the assembly’s agenda. He conveyed greetings from the Custodian of the Holy Mosques and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the Iranian government and its people. Al-Khateeb remarked that Riyadh is open to continuing bilateral dialogue, noting that recent improvements in relations have contributed to regional stability and cooperation.
Al-Khateeb also showed appreciation for Iran’s invitation to the Tehran tourism exhibition, highlighting the value Saudi Arabia places on Iranian handicrafts, including:
