Iran Makes a Grand Comeback at Frankfurt Book Fair After Three-Year Hiatus!

Iran is making a significant comeback at the 77th Frankfurt Book Fair, marking its return after a three-year absence. This prestigious event, held in Frankfurt, Germany, serves as a vital platform for cultural diplomacy and international cooperation in publishing and literature.

According to Ayoub Dehghankar, who serves as the scientific, cultural, and management advisor to the deputy minister for cultural affairs at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, “Iran’s return is part of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance’s broader strategy to expand cultural diplomacy and strengthen international cooperation in publishing and literature.”

Dehghankar emphasized the importance of supporting cultural exports, particularly books, stating, “Among cultural products, books hold a unique importance because exporting them through translation and publication by foreign publishers means sharing Iranian and Islamic thought and worldview with the world.”

The Tehran Publishing Fellowship Program has also been highlighted as a successful initiative aimed at enhancing the cultural economy by facilitating the sale of publication rights for Iranian books to international publishers. “Since the first round of this fellowship was well received by foreign publishers, Iran’s participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair continues that effort and seeks to further those goals,” added Dehghankar.

Alireza Nourizadeh, the secretary of the Tehran Publishing Fellowship Program, described Iran’s involvement in the Frankfurt event as a crucial step toward the internationalization of the country’s publishing industry. He noted, “The Tehran Publishing Fellowship was established to create a platform for cooperation between Iranian and international publishers, support the translation of Iranian works, and improve mutual access to cultural resources.”

This year, the focus of Iran’s participation is on:

  • Expanding translation and co-publishing agreements.
  • Introducing active Iranian publishers to the global market.
  • Facilitating direct engagement with international publishing executives.

Nourizadeh emphasized the significance of the Frankfurt Book Fair, stating, “The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world’s largest publishing event. Our presence at the fair helps expand the network of Iranian publishers and strengthen Iran’s cultural standing globally. We aim to elevate publishing from a domestic cultural activity into an effective tool for cross-cultural dialogue and public diplomacy.”

This year’s edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair commenced on October 15 and will run until October 19 at Messe Frankfurt. The event is not only an opportunity for Iranian publishers to showcase their works but also to forge vital connections in the global literary community.

With Iran’s participation, the emphasis on cultural exchange and collaboration is evident. The Frankfurt Book Fair provides a unique opportunity for Iranian authors and publishers to gain visibility on an international stage, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of Iranian literature and culture among global audiences.

As the fair progresses, it is expected that Iranian representatives will engage in various discussions and networking sessions aimed at enhancing collaborative efforts in the publishing sector. These initiatives are crucial for promoting Iranian literature and expanding its reach beyond national borders.

In conclusion, Iran’s return to the Frankfurt Book Fair signifies a renewed commitment to cultural diplomacy and international cooperation in literature. By participating in this prominent event, Iranian publishers not only showcase their literary heritage but also contribute to the global conversation surrounding literature and culture.
