Imam Mahdi Scouts: A Beacon of Resilience and Construction Amid Political Challenges

Beirut is gearing up to host the largest scout gathering in Lebanon’s history, an event that not only commemorates the fortieth anniversary of Hezbollah’s Imam Mahdi Scouts Association but also coincides with the martyrdom anniversary of Hezbollah’s secretaries-general, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Hashem Safieddine. This gathering highlights the vibrant spirit of the Resistance civil society, especially in contrast to the political incapacity of the state to address its fundamental responsibilities.

The preparations for this monumental event began weeks ago at Beirut’s Sports City, where the association has undertaken impressive logistical and organizational efforts. These efforts include:

  • Comprehensive cleaning of the stands, halls, and courtyards
  • Maintenance and lighting of the facilities
  • Installation of electrical wiring to provide lighting through special generators

Notably, the association has committed to leaving these permanent installations for future use by the facility. The total cost of this voluntary initiative amounted to approximately $20,000, showcasing the spirit of initiative within the resistance community and rejuvenating one of the capital’s most significant landmarks, which has been systematically neglected by Nawaf Salam’s government.

This is not the first time Hezbollah has engaged in such community-focused projects. The group previously invested around $28,000 to rehabilitate the playground before the funerals of martyrs Sayyed Nasrallah and Safi al-Din. These voluntary activities reflect the association’s philosophy established since its inception in 1985, transforming from a modest scouting initiative into a major educational and social institution boasting over 76,000 members.

The Imam Mahdi Scouts have built their mission around the principle of preparing individuals. For them, the essence of resistance starts with educating the soul, fostering awareness, and instilling the values of public service and sincere patriotism. Their curricula have evolved to encompass not only religious, cultural, political, and sports programs but also modern fields such as:

  • The Art of Negotiation
  • Artificial Intelligence

This approach emphasizes that their members represent a generation characterized by knowledge, reason, and openness.

Since taking office, martyr Sayyid Hashim Safi al-Din (R) placed special emphasis on the Imam Mahdi Scouts Association, viewing it as an educational institution dedicated to cultivating a generation of faithful and resilient individuals who would carry forth the banner of Vilayat-el-Fakih (rule of the supreme jurisprudent). His support was not only superficial but involved meticulous organizational follow-up, leaving a lasting impact.

Despite this constructive role, the association has faced persistent media smear campaigns that have sought to mischaracterize it as a closed military organization. This portrayal arises from the fact that it graduates youth who embody the spirit of resistance and commitment. The anti-Resistance faction fears a scouting model that redefines citizenship based on awareness and responsibility, contrasting sharply with a model of dependency or moral ambiguity.

Meanwhile, the political landscape in Lebanon is deteriorating further, as evidenced by the heated exchanges between Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. Berri criticized the government for failing to assist the residents of the South and Bekaa regions affected by Israeli aggression, implying that the budget would not be approved unless it included provisions for reconstruction.

Berri voiced his concerns over the state’s negligence towards destroyed villages, asking rhetorically: “Is it conceivable that the government would not say ‘welcome’ to the people of Aita al-Shaab, Kfar Kila, Houla, Yarin, Marouhin, Dahra, Mays al-Jabal, Blida, Khiyam, Yaroun, and Maroun al-Ras?”

In response, lawmaker Ali Fayyad, aligned with the Resistance bloc in parliament, pointed out the government’s lack of adequate diplomatic and political efforts to counter Israeli aggression. He underscored that the state is not mobilizing its resources effectively to defend Lebanese sovereignty.

This creates a striking paradox: while the government remains absent in the South and falters in its reconstruction efforts, the Imam Mahdi Scouts are actively engaged in restoring Sports City and nurturing a promising generation. The Imam Mahdi Scouts Association now represents more than just a scouting movement; it stands as a distinguished model of constructive engagement in times when corrupt politicians fail, and it serves as a voice for educational resistance that cultivates elites across various fields.

US President Donald Trump’s recent meeting with European leaders at the White House aimed to project unity in addressing the Russia-Ukraine conflict but instead sparked controversy. The plight of Palestine remains unresolved after nearly 80 years, with calls for justice unmet. The UN General Assembly has condemned Israel multiple times, with resolutions calling for withdrawal from occupied territories. The Palestinian issue transcends geopolitics, representing a moral obligation, with the international community’s inaction reflecting a failure to uphold justice.
