UN Strengthens Partnership with Iran for Urban Resilience and Fair Housing Access

The ongoing collaboration between the United Nations and Iran aims to enhance urban resilience and equitable housing access. On the occasion of World Habitat Day, UN Resident Coordinator Stefan Priesner emphasized the importance of sustainable city development in addressing urban crises.

During a recent event on October 6, Priesner highlighted the integral role of the Seventh National Development Plan (2023-2027) and the National Housing Movement in conjunction with the United Nations Cooperation Framework. He stated, “By synergizing these initiatives, we can build a network of sustainable, equitable, and resilient cities that are better prepared for crises and promise a better future for all,” as reported by the Transport and Urban Ministry.

Priesner expressed appreciation for the Iranian government’s efforts and underscored the necessity for robust housing policies that bolster urban resilience against various crises. He noted that the UN Human Settlements Program and other organizations have been active partners in Iran, collaborating in several areas such as:

  • Urban resilience
  • Risk reduction
  • Post-disaster reconstruction
  • Strengthening critical infrastructure, including hospitals

Highlighting the theme of World Habitat Day, “urban crisis response,” Priesner remarked that cities worldwide are at the forefront of crises, from climate change and conflicts to rising inequalities. However, he also pointed out that these urban areas serve as platforms for developing sustainable solutions.

Priesner commended the role of local governments, mayors, women, and youth in tackling urban challenges. He acknowledged the critical housing crisis in Iran, where millions of families struggle to secure adequate housing, with rental costs consuming over a third of household income. He stated, “Iran, like many countries, is facing a severe housing crisis.”

Since 1956, Iran’s urban population has surged by 11 times, and currently, over 77 percent of the population resides in urban areas. Priesner recognized the Iranian government’s commitment to addressing housing issues through its Seventh National Development Plan, stating, “Improving access to housing, reducing dilapidated structures, and utilizing modern construction technologies demonstrate Iran’s commitment to comprehensive and sustainable solutions.”

World Habitat Day, observed on the first Monday of October, serves as a reminder to reflect on the state of our cities and the fundamental right to adequate shelter. Established by the United Nations in 1985, this day encourages global citizens to recognize their power and responsibility in shaping future urban environments.

This year’s observance on October 6 emphasized the theme of “urban crisis response,” which aims to tackle multiple crises affecting urban areas, including:

  1. Climate change
  2. Human displacement
  3. Inequalities

The initiative promotes existing tools and approaches for effective crisis response in urban settings. The successful realization of the “urban crisis response” theme in Iran hinges on collaboration among:

  • Executive agencies
  • Scientific institutions
  • Public participation

This collective effort is essential to ensure sustainable settlements and healthy living environments for both current and future generations. The responsibility lies with all stakeholders to contribute towards a resilient urban future.

As we reflect on the significance of World Habitat Day, it becomes evident that tackling urban challenges requires a concerted effort from all sectors of society. With continued support from the UN and a commitment to innovative housing solutions, Iran can pave the way for a more resilient urban landscape.

In conclusion, the collaboration between the United Nations and Iran is poised to create a significant impact on urban development and housing policies. By focusing on resilience and equity, both entities can work towards a brighter and more sustainable future for urban populations.
