Tehran Welcomes BRICS Summit: A Deep Dive into Geopolitical Technologies
TEHRAN – Iran recently hosted the fourth meeting of the BRICS working group on geospatial technologies and their applications. This significant online event took place from September 30 to October 1, bringing together various BRICS member states, including Brazil, China, Russia, India, Indonesia, Ethiopia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates, as reported by Mehr news agency.
The two-day conference was organized in collaboration with several esteemed scientific institutions, such as:

- Geology and Mineral Exploration Organization
- University of Tehran
- Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology

The first day was dedicated to highlighting the capacities, capabilities, and opportunities for enhancing collaboration among participating nations. This focus on mutual growth emphasizes the importance of international partnerships in the field of geospatial technology.
On the second day of the meeting, participants engaged in discussions aimed at exploring avenues for expanding collaborations in geospatial data and its applications. The issues raised during these discussions will be summarized and formalized into a multilateral cooperation document. This document will establish a framework for joint practices concerning spatial data in the upcoming year, ensuring continued progress and cooperation among member states.
A report detailing actions taken based on this document will be presented at the next meeting, ensuring transparency and accountability in the collaborative efforts.
The third meeting of the BRICS working group on geospatial technologies was notably hosted in Moscow from September 16 to 17, 2024. During this session, a proposal by the former director general of the National Cartographic Center of Iran (NCC) was welcomed, which aimed to establish the BRICS spatial data infrastructure (SDI).
During the opening ceremony, Ali Javidaneh emphasized the critical role of maps and spatial data in the sustainable development of communities. He stated that these tools provide essential information needed for:

Javidaneh also presented several proposals, among which the BRICS SDI garnered significant interest from participants, leading to an agreement on laying the groundwork for its implementation.
