Escalating Gaza Offensive Hits ‘Cataclysmic’ Levels as US Supports Israel at UN
Israeli forces have escalated their military offensive on Gaza City, employing a combination of airstrikes, drone attacks, and ground assaults that have left many neighborhoods in ruins. As civilians desperately flee southward seeking safety, the situation has become increasingly dire, leading to what witnesses describe as “apocalyptic” destruction.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant telecommunications blackouts, severely hampering rescue efforts and obscuring the true scale of casualties. Olga Cherevko, a spokeswoman for the UN’s humanitarian office, shared her firsthand experience with the devastation during a 29-kilometer journey into Gaza City that took a harrowing 14 hours. “The things there, and the scenes on the way to Gaza City, are nothing short of cataclysmic,” she recalled, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Cherevko noted a constant stream of people heading south on foot, as hundreds of thousands remain trapped within the city’s borders. Her UN convoy faced near misses from Israeli strikes, underscoring the perilous conditions for both civilians and aid workers.
The Israeli military maintains that its operations are focused on dismantling Hamas battalions, freeing captives, and eliminating what they label as “terror infrastructure.” However, humanitarian agencies contend that the military tactics—advancing from multiple directions and pushing families toward the coast—result in the systematic compression of civilians into increasingly unsafe areas. With much of Gaza designated as an evacuation zone, aid organizations argue that there are no genuine “safe zones” remaining.

As Gaza City continues to endure relentless bombardment, the United States recently blocked a ceasefire plan presented at the UN Security Council on September 18. The draft resolution, which garnered support from 14 members, called for an immediate and unconditional halt to hostilities and unrestricted humanitarian access. However, Washington vetoed the measure, marking its sixth veto since the onset of the war, arguing that the resolution failed to condemn Hamas or acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense.
Outside the UN headquarters in New York, demonstrators expressed their anger, shouting “Shame on you!” at U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus, who represented Washington during the session. The reaction from Palestinian groups was one of outrage. Hamas described the veto as “blatant complicity” and a “green light” for ongoing massacres, while the Islamic Jihad accused the U.S. of functioning as “an actual partner” in the conflict. Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour characterized the move as “deeply regrettable and painful,” with Algeria’s envoy pleading for forgiveness on behalf of their Palestinian brothers and sisters.
Human rights organizations have warned that the U.S. veto effectively shields Israel from accountability and exacerbates the already dire humanitarian disaster. With shelters in the south overwhelmed, hospitals collapsing under pressure, and famine-related deaths continuing to rise, the international community is increasingly vocal in its calls for a ceasefire that the U.S. continues to obstruct. For the civilians trapped in Gaza City, each passing hour without relief translates into lives lost.
