Epic Stage Adaptation of ‘Ramses II’ Set to Captivate Audiences in Tehran

In an exciting cultural event, a loose adaptation of French playwright Sebastien Thiery’s acclaimed play, “Ramses II”, is set to grace the stage at Tehran’s City Theater Complex later this month. This contemporary black comedy promises to captivate audiences with its unique blend of humor and psychological depth.

Directed by Reza Gouran, this production is based on a translation by the esteemed translator Shahla Haeri. The cast features talented actors including Sahar Dolatshahi, Saeid Changizian, Hadith Miramini, and Ali Shademan, who are expected to bring this intriguing narrative to life.

Originally premiered in 2017 at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens, “Ramses II” explores the complexities of family dynamics through a satirical lens. Despite its reference to the iconic Egyptian pharaoh, the play is not a historical drama; rather, it serves as a darkly comedic exploration of human psychology.

The plot revolves around a couple, Jean and Elisabeth, who are eagerly anticipating the return of their daughter and son-in-law, Benoit and Matthieu, from Egypt. However, when Matthieu arrives solo, the couple quickly becomes aware of his wife’s mysterious absence. His peculiar behavior raises immediate concerns, setting off a chain of events that leads to an unsettling family gathering.

As the story unfolds, the narrative morphs into a surreal experience, blending elements of reality with fantasy. Key themes include:

  • Family Secrets: The play delves into the hidden truths that families often conceal.
  • Psychological Depth: It examines the fragility of human relationships and the fears that lie beneath the surface.
  • Absurd Humor: The unexpected twists challenge the audience’s perception of normalcy.

Through its clever dialogue and unexpected plot developments, “Ramses II” encourages the audience to confront the fine line between reality and illusion. The title itself evokes themes of power, immortality, and mystique, which are intricately woven into the fabric of the narrative.

Renowned for its sharp wit and dark humor, “Ramses II” has earned critical acclaim, captivating both audiences and critics alike. The original cast featured prominent French actors such as François Berléand, Évelyne Buyle, and Éric Elmosnino, contributing to the play’s widespread success.

Sebastien Thiery, the playwright, has a rich background in theater. After training at the Cours Florent and the Conservatoire Superieur d’Art Dramatique in Paris, he embarked on his writing career at the age of 30. His debut was with “Sans ascenseur”, directed by Jean-Michel Ribes at the Théâtre du Rond-Point in 2005. He is known for performing in his own works, including “La Fâche” and “Dieu habite Düsseldorf”.

Throughout his career, Thiery has penned around 300 episodes for the Canal+ series “Chez maman”, showcasing his versatility as both a writer and an actor. His theatrical repertoire includes notable works such as:

  1. “Piggy Bank” – Awarded the Prix Barrière and two Molieres in 2009.
  2. “Who’s Mr. Schmitt?” – Premiered in 2009, directed by José Paul.
  3. “Falling from the Trees” – Produced in 2012.
  4. “L’Origine du Monde” – Released in 2013.
  5. “Two Stark Naked Men” – Debuted in 2014.
  6. “Momo” – Premiered in 2015.
  7. “Eight Euros An Hour” – Released in 2017.
  8. “Demain la revanche” and “Video Club” – Recent works in 2022 and 2023.

With its unique narrative and compelling characters, “Ramses II” invites audiences to reflect on the complexities of human relationships and the hidden fears that often govern them. As the play prepares to debut in Tehran, it promises to be a thought-provoking experience that blends laughter with deeper existential themes.
