Health Minister Urges Global Action to Protect Civilians in Gaza Crisis
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: The ongoing situation in Gaza has reached alarming levels, prompting urgent calls for global intervention. Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarqandi has issued a heartfelt plea to international communities, emphasizing the dire need to address the humanitarian crises affecting civilians in the region. His open letter outlines the catastrophic conditions that have unfolded, primarily impacting women and children, as reported by IRNA.
Zafarqandi expressed profound sorrow over the escalating violence, which he described as exceeding critical thresholds, and highlighted the collapse of the public health system in Gaza. He labeled the current situation as a “deliberate destruction of the very essence of human life” and urged immediate and effective international response to what he termed “ongoing collective punishment, ethnic cleansing, and genocide.”
In his letter, Zafarqandi detailed the heartbreaking realities faced by the population:
- Infants are succumbing to hunger and thirst, dying in their mothers’ arms.
- Over 32% of children under two years old are suffering from severe malnutrition.
He condemned the actions of the Israeli regime and called for prompt global actions, including:
- Establishing field hospitals to address immediate health needs.
- Dispatching relief teams to tackle the food crisis in collaboration with international partners.
- Lifting the blockade to facilitate the delivery of UN humanitarian aid, including food and medicines.
- Allocating emergency financial and logistical resources within the next 48 hours.
Zafarqandi emphasized that this is not just a request but a moral and ethical obligation, asserting that any delay in action costs innocent lives.
The Impact of Israel’s Military Assault
The relentless military operations conducted by Israel have left Gaza in a state of death, destruction, and starvation. Despite widespread awareness, the global community has largely remained passive, with the situation increasingly being viewed as a deliberate campaign of extermination.
Recent reports indicate that Israeli strikes on July 21 resulted in the deaths of dozens more Palestinians. Just the day before, Israeli troops killed over 100 Palestinians, among them 92 unarmed civilians who were shot while seeking food near the Zikim crossing and at aid distribution points in Rafah and Khan Younis.
The humanitarian crisis has escalated to catastrophic levels due to Israel’s suffocating siege, which has pushed Gaza towards the brink of famine. With vital crossings sealed and humanitarian aid severely restricted, the 2.3 million residents of Gaza are facing real-time starvation.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has raised alarms, reporting “desperate messages of starvation” from within Gaza, even from its own staff. According to a post on X, the agency revealed that “food prices have increased 40-fold,” while sufficient food supplies for the entire population remain stockpiled just outside Gaza.
UNRWA has condemned the crisis as “manmade” and called for urgent intervention, stating: “The suffering in Gaza is manmade and must be stopped. Lift the siege and let aid in safely and at scale.”
Voices from the World Food Programme
The World Food Programme (WFP) has echoed these urgent warnings. Antoine Renard, WFP’s representative for Palestine, shared his insights from occupied East Jerusalem (al-Quds), stating: “You have a level of despair that people are ready to risk their lives just to reach any of the assistance actually coming into Gaza.” He highlighted shocking statistics, noting that the price of 1 kilogram of flour has skyrocketed to $100.
Renard also noted that many families are enduring days without food, surviving on limited meals every third day. He pointed out that only a “very limited” number of charity kitchens remain operational, and malnutrition rates are soaring, with fainting among civilians becoming increasingly common.
He concluded with a stark assessment: “[There’s a] soaring number of people facing malnutrition, and we can really see that the situation is really getting to levels that we’ve never seen ever before.”
With the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorating rapidly, it is imperative for the global community to take immediate action, ensuring that aid reaches those in desperate need and alleviating the suffering of countless civilians.
