Iran and Afghanistan: A Vital Link for Regional Security and Stability, Says Araghchi

Araghchi Emphasizes Interconnected Security: Iran and Afghanistan’s Stability at Stake

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized the intertwined security and stability of Iran and Afghanistan, advocating for enhanced cooperation between the two nations. This meeting highlights the importance of collaboration to address pressing bilateral issues.

During his visit to Kabul on Sunday, Araghchi met with Mohammad Hasan Akhund, the acting Prime Minister of Afghanistan. He expressed optimism about the current state of security in Afghanistan, noting:

“We are happy that after four decades, overall security has been established in Afghanistan, and acceptance of diplomats at a high level and the maintenance of relations show that Iran has strong relations with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”

Araghchi further stated:

“Iran’s security and stability depend on Afghanistan’s security and stability, and the recent developments in Afghanistan have led us to conclude that cooperation with the Islamic Emirate should be further expanded.”

One of the key issues discussed was the ongoing water dispute between the two countries. Araghchi highlighted the need for Afghanistan to adhere to the terms of the Helmand River Treaty of 1973, which stipulates:

  • Afghanistan must allow the flow of water from the Helmand River into Iran.
  • The treaty has faced challenges, resulting in a decreased water share for Iran due to excessive irrigation and dam construction in Afghanistan.

Moreover, Araghchi addressed the rising number of Afghan refugees in Iran, emphasizing the necessity for closer cooperation to tackle these issues. He reassured that Iran is committed to facilitating the return of illegal Afghan refugees:

“Iran was committed to returning illegal Afghan refugees.”

The Afghan Prime Minister also underscored the importance of increasing diplomatic visits to bolster political and economic ties between the two neighboring Muslim countries.

This visit marks Araghchi’s first official engagement in Afghanistan since assuming the role of Iran’s Foreign Minister. He was accompanied by a team of economic experts, signaling a focus on strengthening economic relations during these discussions.

Overall, the dialogue between Iran and Afghanistan presents an opportunity to enhance their bilateral relations and address critical regional challenges.
