Iran’s Foreign Minister Set to Make Historic Visit to Afghanistan This Sunday

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to visit Afghanistan this Sunday, engaging in crucial discussions with the Taliban’s interim government on topics of mutual interest. This visit highlights Iran’s commitment to fostering strong relations with its neighboring countries.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, the trip is aligned with Iran’s neighborliness policy and aims to safeguard the interests of both nations. He emphasized the significance of this diplomatic engagement, stating:

“Today’s trip by Dr. Araghchi to Kabul is in line with the neighborliness policy and the inherent mission of the Foreign Ministry to follow up on our national interests via interaction and consultation on common concerns and interests. The trip can serve as a turning point in using the numerous bonds between the two nations to protect their mutual interests.”

This daylong visit marks the first time Araghchi has traveled to Afghanistan since assuming the role of foreign minister under President Masoud Pezeshkian’s administration, which began in July of last year. Notably, the visit is supported by:

  • Representatives from various Iranian ministries
  • A dedicated trade delegation

Furthermore, on November 24, 2024, Araghchi appointed Alireza Bikdeli as Iran’s caretaker ambassador to Kabul, succeeding Hassan Kazemi Qomi. This change signals a strategic move in strengthening diplomatic ties between Iran and Afghanistan.
