Tehran and Abu Dhabi Strengthen Environmental Partnership for a Sustainable Future

Iran and the UAE are intensifying their cooperation to combat the growing challenges posed by sand and dust storms (SDSs) and desertification. This collaborative effort also focuses on reducing air pollutant emissions, a critical environmental concern for both nations. The head of Iran’s Department of Environment (DOE), Shina Ansari, recently visited the United Arab Emirates on an official invitation from UAE Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This two-day visit aims to strengthen ties between the two countries in addressing pressing environmental issues.

The discussions between Iranian and Emirati officials took place after their initial meeting at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024. The urgency of enhancing environmental cooperation was emphasized during these discussions.

Key Highlights from the Meeting

During the meeting, several important points were raised:

  • Joint Action Plan: Ansari expressed Iran’s readiness to develop a comprehensive joint action plan to enhance environmental collaborations with the UAE.
  • Commitment to Future Generations: Sheikh Mansour welcomed the proposed initiatives, underscoring the importance of environmental ties for protecting the interests of children and future generations.
  • Renewable Energy Projects: Sultan Al Jaber, UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, reiterated the UAE’s commitment to promoting cooperation with Iran, particularly in joint oil, gas, and renewable energy projects.
  • Modern Technologies: Ansari highlighted the importance of using modern technologies in the UAE to mitigate air pollutant emissions.

In addition, the two countries have previously signed two memorandums of understanding aimed at protecting the environment and combating sand and dust storms, laying the groundwork for the implementation of these agreements.

Continued Engagement with Emirati Officials

During her visit, Ansari was scheduled to meet with other high-ranking Emirati officials, including:

  • Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment
  • Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy

Iran’s Environmental Policy Priorities

According to former DOE head Ali Salajeqeh, environmental diplomacy has become a cornerstone of Iran’s political strategy. The Iranian government has taken significant steps to bolster this aspect of diplomacy, including hosting a regional summit on combating sand and dust storms in 2022. This summit attracted ministers and representatives from various regional nations, along with six international agencies, culminating in the Tehran Declaration.

The Tehran Declaration reflects a commitment to address the increasing prevalence of sand and dust storms in the region. The current Iranian administration is focused on enhancing regional and global collaborations not only to tackle SDSs but also to address water diplomacy and transboundary water issues, which are equally critical.

Strategic Environmental Policies

The Iranian administration’s environmental policies include:

  • Exchanging regional and global experiences in environmental management.
  • Facilitating interactions that leverage global experiences and modern knowledge.
  • Engaging in various levels of environment-related negotiations to attract resources and enhance capabilities.
  • Securing national interests in environmental matters.

Through these initiatives, Iran aims to foster a collaborative approach to environmental issues, ensuring that both Iran and the UAE can effectively combat the impacts of sand and dust storms while promoting sustainable development.

In conclusion, the ongoing dialogues and initiatives between Iranian and Emirati officials signify a crucial step toward enhancing environmental cooperation in the region. By working together, both countries aim to create a more sustainable future, addressing pressing environmental challenges and safeguarding the interests of future generations.
