The International Energy Agency (IEA) warns that new US sanctions on Russian and Iranian oil could disrupt their supply chains significantly. The sanctions target over 160 tankers linked to 22% of Russia’s seaborne oil exports in 2024 and aim to dismantle a “shadow fleet” that evades detection. Crude prices have risen above $80 a barrel due to these tightened sanctions and cold weather. While the IEA anticipates growth in global oil supply, particularly from non-OPEC+ sources, it maintains cautious forecasts for Russian and Iranian supply as the full impact of the sanctions remains uncertain.
