Hongqiao Market, or Pearl Market, in Beijing, is a vibrant hub for shopping and cultural immersion, offering goods from electronics to silk and pearls. During a recent visit with foreign journalists, I explored this lively marketplace and met Mr. Liu Dong, a master of inside-bottle painting. Liu, a fifth-generation artisan, shared insights into this intricate craft, which blends history and artistry. His works, often showcasing traditional Chinese motifs, face challenges from mass production and declining interest among youth. Efforts to preserve this art include workshops and government support. The market exemplifies China’s rich cultural heritage and the importance of supporting traditional artisans.
