The Oltan fortress in northwest Iran, a significant mud-brick archaeological site, may soon gain UNESCO World Heritage status, according to Iranian archaeologist Rouhollah Mohammadi. Located along the Aras River near Oltan, the fortress features historical elements such as a first-millennium BC cemetery, the Oltan tappeh from the Parthian and Sassanian periods, and a central citadel spanning various eras.
