Iran’s Foreign Minister Declares ‘Clear’ Commitment to Global Nonproliferation Efforts
In a recent statement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated the Islamic Republic’s unwavering commitment to the global nonproliferation regime, emphasizing the country’s stance on nuclear weapons. This declaration comes in light of ongoing international discussions surrounding nuclear capabilities.
Araghchi expressed his views through a post on his X account, where he stated:
“It is audacious to preach that Iranians must once and for all make it clear that they will renounce to have nuclear weapons.”
He highlighted several key points regarding Iran’s nuclear policy:
- The Islamic Republic has been a founding member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) since 1968.
- Iran’s Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has issued a religious edict that prohibits all weapons of mass destruction.
- In 2015, Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which instituted the most rigorous inspection regime in the history of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
- The JCPOA explicitly reaffirms that Iran will never seek, develop, or acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
Araghchi’s statements underscore Iran’s commitment to nonproliferation and its readiness to engage in constructive dialogue about its nuclear program. The ongoing international discourse continues to shape the landscape of nuclear diplomacy.
