Iran Confirms Swiss National’s Suicide in Jail Linked to Military Site Photos
In a tragic incident that has raised concerns about the treatment of foreign nationals in Iran, a Swiss national reportedly took his own life while incarcerated. This individual was arrested for photographing restricted military sites, highlighting the serious implications of violating national security laws.
During a recent briefing, Iran’s Judiciary spokesman, Asghar Jahangir, provided details regarding the circumstances surrounding this case:
- The Swiss national, originally from Namibia, entered Iran as a tourist in October.
- He traveled through the Dogharon border crossing, which links Afghanistan’s Herat to Iran’s Mashhad.
- Authorities apprehended him in a military Delta area for allegedly taking pictures of restricted military zones and for supposed collaboration with a hostile government.
Jahangir offered an account of the events leading to the individual’s suicide:
- After having breakfast, the prisoner turned off the light in his cell.
- He managed to hang himself using a cut curtain from the bathroom in a corner that was not covered by CCTV cameras.
- Prison staff responded promptly upon being alerted, but unfortunately, the prisoner could not be revived.
In the aftermath of the incident, a delegation from the Swiss embassy, along with a trusted doctor, examined the body and confirmed the suicide. The body was then transferred to a forensic pathologist in Tehran and subsequently handed over to Swiss representatives.
This incident underscores the complexities surrounding foreign nationals’ interactions with the Iranian legal system, particularly regarding national security issues.
