Iran is making significant strides in the healthcare sector, especially in the production and export of medical equipment. Recently, nine Iranian knowledge-based firms showcased their innovations at the 30th edition of Hospitalar, the largest health event in Latin America, held from May 19 to 22 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

This four-day event provided a unique platform for business opportunities, networking, congresses, and knowledge exchange. Attendees experienced a vibrant exhibition featuring 1,200 exhibitors from over 80 countries, all presenting their latest advancements in various health sectors. The showcased products included:

  • Medical and dental tools

The presence of Iranian knowledge-based companies was notable, as they displayed a range of innovative products across different health fields. Key highlights included:

  • Dental implants

  • Artificial intelligence platforms for healthcare
  • Physiotherapy devices

In addition to the exhibition, the Iranian delegation conducted meetings with companies from Asia, Europe, and Latin America. They also engaged with Brazilian medical equipment associations and Brazil’s Health Ministry to enhance technological cooperation. The goal was to share expertise and expand the export of Iranian products, thereby boosting the nation’s presence in the global healthcare market.

Self-Sufficiency in Medicine and Medical Equipment

The Iranian government places a high priority on achieving self-sufficiency in the production of medicine and medical equipment. Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarqandi emphasized the importance of these sectors for public health, stating, “We are trying to reach self-sufficiency for the supply of medicine and medical equipment,” as reported by IRNA.

According to the head of Iran’s Union of Medical Equipment Manufacturers and Exporters, the country exports medical equipment valued at approximately $20 million to more than 60 countries annually. Notably, over 70 percent of medical equipment and 100 percent of standard hospital beds are produced domestically, demonstrating the nation’s capabilities in healthcare manufacturing.

Additionally, over 95 percent of specialized ICU and CCU beds, along with more than 85 percent of operating room medical equipment—such as anesthesia machines—are manufactured with advanced technology within Iran. Abdolreza Yaqoubzadeh, the union’s head, noted the country’s annual demand for medical equipment production is estimated at $3 to $4 billion, with approximately $1 billion of that figure currently being imported.

With around 600 active medical equipment companies in Iran, these manufacturers supply nearly 99 percent of the medicine available in the domestic market. They produce and offer over 10,000 types of medical equipment for both local and international markets, making significant contributions to the healthcare landscape.

The continuous efforts of Iranian manufacturers in the medical equipment sector are commendable, as they strive to provide quality alternatives at competitive prices. Various laboratory equipment is now available at much lower prices compared to foreign counterparts, which is a testament to the growing capabilities of the industry.

In conclusion, the participation of Iranian knowledge-based firms at the Hospitalar event not only highlights the country’s advancements in healthcare technology but also underscores its commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in medical production. The ongoing collaboration with international partners will further enhance Iran’s position in the global healthcare market.
