Araqchi Lands in Rome for Crucial Indirect Talks with the U.S.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has arrived in Rome, Italy, to engage in the fifth round of indirect negotiations with the U.S. President’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. These discussions are being facilitated through the mediation of Oman, marking a significant step in ongoing diplomatic efforts.

To date, Minister Araqchi has participated in four rounds of talks, which include three sessions in Muscat and one in Rome, all conducted indirectly with the assistance of Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Al-Busaid.

Accompanying the Foreign Minister is a delegation that comprises:

  • Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi
  • Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi
  • Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei
  • Several other diplomats and experts

Prior to his departure for Italy on Friday, Araqchi shared his insights on his X account regarding the upcoming negotiations. He stated, “figuring out the path to a deal is not rocket science: Zero nuclear weapons = we do have a deal. Zero enrichment = we do not have a deal. Time to decide…”

This latest round of discussions is crucial as it aims to clarify the terms of a potential agreement and address key issues surrounding nuclear weapons and enrichment.
