Iran's Envoy Rejects US, UK, and French Claims at UN Meeting: A Strong Stand Against Allegations

Iran Urges Global Outcry Against Israeli Aggression in Syria

In a recent statement addressing the ongoing conflict in Syria, H.E. Mr. Amir Saeed Iravani, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, emphasized the urgent need for international cooperation and humanitarian assistance. The repeated military actions, particularly the May 2 airstrike near the presidential palace, have raised significant concerns regarding regional peace and stability, particularly with the backing of the United States.

The following is a comprehensive overview of Ambassador Iravani’s speech made before the United Nations Security Council on May 21, 2025, titled “The situation in the Middle East: (Syria).”

Key Points from Ambassador Iravani’s Address:

  1. Humanitarian Aid and Sanctions:

Ambassador Iravani welcomed the growing international consensus that humanitarian and reconstruction aid in Syria should remain free from political manipulation. He noted recent announcements by the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom to lift and suspend unilateral sanctions, describing these actions as positive but long overdue.

He stated, “The suffering of the Syrian people should not be used for political purposes. We call for the full and unconditional lifting of all unilateral sanctions.” Iravani highlighted that these sanctions violate the UN Charter and international law. Currently, over 16 million Syrians require urgent assistance, and any easing of sanctions should lead to tangible improvements in their lives.

  2. Syria’s Right to Sovereignty:

Ambassador Iravani reaffirmed Syria’s right and responsibility to maintain peace and security within its borders, emphasizing the fragility of its security due to ongoing foreign military presence and illegal occupations, particularly in the northeast and south.

He condemned Israel’s continued occupation of the Syrian Golan, stating, “Israel’s repeated attacks, including the May 2 airstrike, must be firmly condemned.” These actions not only threaten regional peace but are also facilitated by U.S. support. The ambassador stressed that Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be honored.

  3. Combating Terrorism:

As a neighboring country, Iran strongly advocates for the fight against all forms of terrorism in Syria, particularly the threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs). Iravani expressed deep concern regarding reports of FTFs being relocated to other conflict zones, which could exacerbate instability and pose risks to neighboring nations.

He urged the Security Council to remain vigilant and implement effective measures to counteract this threat. The ambassador welcomed the PKK’s announcement to disarm, considering it an important step towards rejecting violence and fostering regional stability.

  4. Syrian Sovereignty in Political Processes:

Iranian Ambassador Iravani highlighted that the future of Syria must be determined solely by the Syrian people without external interference. He reiterated that any political process should be led by Syria, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2254.

“Iran fully supports the UN Special Envoy, Mr. Geir Pedersen, and his efforts to promote an inclusive process,” he stated. The ambassador also expressed support for dialogue between the Syrian interim authorities and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as a crucial step toward national integration and stability.

Iran’s commitment to promoting a peaceful resolution in Syria is evident in its support for inclusive dialogue and engagement that ensures equal rights for all Syrians. The ambassador concluded his address by thanking the President of the Security Council for facilitating this important discussion.

As the situation in Syria continues to evolve, the need for humanitarian assistance, respect for sovereignty, and collaborative efforts to combat terrorism remain critical for achieving long-term stability in the region.
