Foreign Minister Warns: Misusing JCPOA ‘Snapback’ Could Trigger Serious Consequences

In a significant development regarding the 2015 nuclear deal, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has issued a stern warning to the European signatories about the potential misuse of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)’s snapback mechanism. This warning highlights critical concerns about the future of diplomatic relations between Iran and Europe.

Araqchi emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating:

“Iran has repeatedly made its position clear. We have officially cautioned all JCPOA signatories that any abuse of the snapback mechanism would lead to consequences—not only ending Europe’s role in the deal, but potentially escalating tensions to a point of no return.”

In his message, Araqchi specifically called out the three key European nations—Britain, France, and Germany—collectively referred to as the E3. He urged them to reconsider how the current stalemate came to be. His remarks included:

  • Araqchi expressed readiness to visit London, Paris, and Berlin to foster a new chapter in diplomatic relations.
  • His initiative led to preliminary discussions among deputy foreign ministers, which he described as “a fragile but promising beginning.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister also stressed the need for Europe to engage more deeply during this critical juncture, stating that:

“The Islamic Republic and its European partners need to turn the page toward deeper diplomatic engagement.”

Araqchi’s warnings came after he penned an op-ed for the French Weekly Le Point, where he addressed the recurring threats from the E3 to invoke the snapback mechanism and reimpose U.N. sanctions on Iran. He cautioned that such actions:

  • “Risks triggering a global non-proliferation crisis”
  • Could primarily impact Europe itself.

As the situation evolves, the international community will be watching closely to see how diplomatic efforts unfold and if a resolution can be reached without further escalating tensions.
