Excitement Unfolds as 36th Tehran International Book Fair Kicks Off at Imam Khomeini Mosalla!

The 36th Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF) commenced on Wednesday at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla in Tehran, with the presence of the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Seyyed Abbas Salehi. This annual event aims to promote literature and foster cultural exchange, making it a significant occasion for book lovers and publishers alike.

During the opening ceremony, Minister Salehi emphasized the vital role of books in the development of Iran and the importance of nurturing a culture centered around literature. He stated, “If we want development, a bright future, and progress for Iran, and if we want to thwart the enemies, we must think more and more about books and strive to expand this great culture of Iranian power.”

Salehi underscored the historical significance of books in shaping ancient Iran and Islamic civilization, noting, “Islamic civilization was formed and progressed on the wings of mosques and libraries.” He insisted that the creation of the “Shahnameh” after the advent of Islam was crucial for preserving the Persian language.

Furthermore, he articulated the necessity of books for enduring civilizations, stating, “If a civilization wants to emerge and endure, it needs books. Books, regardless of their form, represent a coherent thought. If a country or society desires lasting endurance and wishes not to be absorbed by the thoughts of its rivals and invaders, it must rely on books for that lasting power.”

Salehi also called for a collective concern for literature, declaring, “The concern for books must be a concern for all those who think about the social development of Iran. This should not just be the concern of the Ministry of Culture, authors, or the publishing community. If we want proper social development, we need to produce and consume good books.”

After the ceremony, Salehi visited the Iraqi pavilion, which is the special guest of this year’s TIBF. He met with Ahmed Fakak Al-Badrani, the Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities of Iraq, to discuss the significance of cultural ties between the two nations. Salehi remarked, “This exhibition, which annually provides a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the latest domestic and international publishing achievements, has a special guest this year—Dr. Al-Badrani. His presence at this event symbolizes the cultural solidarity and longstanding connections between the two nations of Iran and Iraq.”

In his speech, the minister highlighted the role of books and culture as bridges between nations, saying, “Today, here at this exhibition, we are witnessing the close bond between the Iranian and Iraqi people.” He also praised the diversity of literature on display, noting, “From the rich Persian literature to the exquisite Arabic literature, and from ancient historical works to modern thoughts, we witness a remarkable diversity of human intellect here, all speaking a universal language.”

Salehi continued by stating, “This diversity showcases the cultural synchronization and synergy between the two great nations of Iran and Iraq.” He expressed hope that the fair would strengthen cultural relations and enhance international publishing cooperation.

This year, Iraq is represented by 15 publishers, including one affiliated with the Iraqi Council of Ministers and 14 members of the Iraqi Publishers Association. Additionally, over 2,600 Iranian publishers are showcasing their works at the fair. The event will also feature contributions from 50 international applicants, with books primarily published between 2023 and 2025.
