Fars Officials Set to Launch Sepidan as Premier Tourism Destination
Located in the heart of southern Iran, Sepidan in Fars province is emerging as a promising tourism hotspot. With its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and favorable climate, Sepidan is set to become a special tourism area, drawing both domestic and international visitors.
Situated just 65 kilometers west of Shiraz, Sepidan is renowned for its lush green trees, majestic mountains, and vibrant springs. This city is quickly becoming a sought-after destination for many tourists, especially those from the Arab states of the Persian Gulf.
Amin Salahi, a tourism activist and experienced mountain climber, emphasizes the unique geography of Sepidan. He notes that the city’s altitude and proximity to the equator contribute to its exceptional climate. Salahi explained that the surrounding mountains feed three major basins and rivers: Karoun, Fahliyan, and Kor. He stated that more than 30 peaks, each soaring above 3,000 meters, capture the snow and rain from these watersheds.
One of the standout features of Sepidan is its ski resorts, which hold the title of the southernmost ski resorts in the Northern Hemisphere. The region enjoys excellent skiing conditions, with over 70 percent of days being sunny and windless, making it a perfect spot for winter sports enthusiasts.
Salahi also highlighted the potential for ecotourism in the area, pointing out that many villages, including Ardakan, have homes that can be transformed into ecotourism sites. The city is rich in craftsmanship, with numerous brick and stone buildings showcasing local handicrafts, creating a vibrant tourism image.
A key factor for boosting tourism in Sepidan is enhancing the local culture of hospitality and tourism among residents and visitors. According to the governor of Sepidan, Ali Alizadeh, the city is home to over 35 tourism zones. He emphasized that attracting both domestic and foreign investors is crucial for the development of the tourism sector.
Alizadeh mentioned that involving investors in Sepidan would ensure that tourists receive high-quality services, thus fostering a prosperous tourism environment. He also noted that a thriving tourism industry could lead to significant economic benefits, including:

- Reduction in unemployment rates
- Higher income levels for residents
- Market expansion
However, the tourism industry in Sepidan faces challenges, such as the lack of a registered tourist document. Despite numerous attempts to formalize its status as a special tourism zone, the desired outcomes have yet to materialize. Alizadeh identified several notable tourist attractions in Sepidan, including:
- Margoon and Chikan waterfalls
- Tange Marzban and Tange Morvarid
- Beram Firooz Mountain
- Chellehgah recreation site
This year, Sepidan has been recognized as a top tourist city during the Nowruz holidays. Alizadeh reported that over two million tourists visited the city’s attractions, even amidst the chilly weather typical of the season.
With a population of approximately 52,000, Sepidan is predominantly rural, with 70 percent of the residents living in villages, while the remaining population resides in the urban areas of Ardakan and Homashahr. The potential for tourism in Sepidan is vast, and with the right investments and development strategies, this city could very well transform into a prime destination in southern Iran.
