Triumphant Milestone: Celebrating Victory on the 470th Day!

The recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas marks a significant turning point in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the diminishing ambitions of the Israeli regime in Gaza. This truce, which took effect on a Sunday after 470 days of relentless strikes against the besieged Palestinian territory, signifies a crucial moment for both sides caught in this prolonged struggle.

The ceasefire was implemented after a nearly three-hour delay, during which Israeli forces tragically killed nearly 20 Palestinians and injured many others. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously accused Hamas of failing to provide the names of three captives, which were to be exchanged for dozens of Palestinian prisoners. However, Hamas eventually released these captives as 90 Palestinian prisoners were set free from Israeli jails.

This ceasefire is structured into three key phases:

• Initial Phase: The first six weeks will focus on the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from central Gaza and the safe return of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza.
• Subsequent Phases: The agreement aims to lead to the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, with the release of captives in exchange for the freedom of hundreds of Palestinians.
• Humanitarian Aid: The deal is also expected to facilitate a significant increase in humanitarian aid to the region.

Since the onset of the conflict on October 7, 2023, Netanyahu had vowed to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of captives. Unfortunately, after more than 15 months of warfare, the Israeli army has struggled to achieve these goals, resulting in the deaths of over 46,900 Palestinians, including approximately 18,000 children. Additionally, more than 110,000 Palestinians have sustained injuries throughout this period.

The actual number of fatalities may be even higher than reported, as many Palestinians are still unaccounted for, trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings or buried in unmarked graves. The Israeli military has been accused of committing severe atrocities, including targeting civilian infrastructure and bombing hospitals that provided refuge for patients and displaced individuals.

Furthermore, Israel’s blockade has severely restricted the flow of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, particularly affecting the northern regions. The conflict escalated after Hamas executed a surprise military operation in southern Israel, known as the Al-Aqsa Storm, resulting in the deaths of over 1,100 people and the capture of around 250 individuals.

The ceasefire agreement also stipulates that all remaining captives held in Gaza will be released if Israel adheres to the terms. This decisive shift indicates that Israel has conceded defeat, with its aspirations of vanquishing Hamas having turned into a daunting reality.

On Friday, an Israeli think tank acknowledged the implications of the ceasefire, criticizing Netanyahu and his allies for prolonging the conflict. The Israeli Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) pointed out that “the implications of the agreement (ceasefire) are clear: Israel will not bring about the ‘collapse’ of Hamas because it has never been able to do so.”

The INSS further highlighted that Netanyahu’s decision to extend the war was driven by his personal interests and shortsightedness, which has unfortunately cost many Israeli lives. Since the commencement of the Al-Aqsa Storm, more than 800 Israeli troops have been killed, including around 400 soldiers since the ground incursion into Gaza began in late October 2023.

The ongoing military actions have also led to a significant erosion of Israel’s international standing, deepening its isolation on the global stage. Domestic tensions have escalated as public protests against Netanyahu’s military strategy have become increasingly common across Israeli cities since the conflict began.

Moreover, the failure of military objectives has resulted in notable resignations among Israeli military and security officials, highlighting the growing discontent within the regime. Netanyahu’s acceptance of the ceasefire was seen as a last resort, forced by the resilience of the Palestinian people.

Despite the ceasefire, hardline factions within Netanyahu’s coalition have expressed their discontent, with some members resigning in protest. On Sunday, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir stepped down from the cabinet, joined by other party members, as the ceasefire took effect. The Otzma Yehudit party, which had previously threatened to withdraw from the coalition, condemned the ceasefire as a capitulation to Hamas.

Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, who had controversially suggested that Israel might consider using nuclear weapons against Gaza, was also among those who resigned. The combination of threats and military actions has failed to subdue the Palestinian spirit and resistance.
