Unveiling ‘Year Zero’: Tehran Exhibition Exposes Atrocities of the Zionist Regime

TEHRAN- The international cartoon and caricature exhibition “Year Zero” has officially opened at the Palestine Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran. This exhibition highlights a year marked by the egregious crimes committed by the Zionist regime in Gaza and Lebanon. The opening ceremony took place on Monday and was attended by various cultural officials and Iranian artists.

Co-organized with the North Khorasan province’s Art Bureau, the exhibition features an impressive collection of 700 cartoons created by 65 artists from 42 countries, with 60 selected works on display at the museum.

During the ceremony, Akram Sediqi, the head of North Khorasan province’s Art Bureau, spoke about the ongoing tragic events following October 7 and the attacks on civilian centers in Gaza by the Zionist regime. She described the exhibition as the second artistic event focusing on Palestine organized by the North Khorasan Art Bureau.

Sediqi also referenced a prior exhibition titled “The Hospital is Not a War Zone,” which centered on the bombing of hospitals in Gaza. She emphasized that the current exhibition reflects the deep concerns of artists worldwide, aiming to portray the profound aspects of this humanitarian catastrophe.

Furthermore, she mentioned the alarming statistics regarding casualties in Gaza, which report 600,000 injured individuals. This figure exemplifies the extent of the ongoing tragedy, which is often overlooked by international media. “The exhibition provides an opportunity to reflect the global concerns of artists regarding the Palestinian people,” she remarked.

The exhibition features over 60 pieces that showcase a diverse range of beliefs and nationalities, including Muslim, Christian, and other religious artists motivated by humanitarian and ethical principles.

Abbas Naseri, the artistic secretary and curator of “Year Zero,” highlighted the crucial role of art in confronting harsh realities. He explained that the works displayed are not mere reflections of hearsay but are based on real images and direct experiences of tragedy. “Some scenes can only be portrayed through the bitter humor of caricature,” he noted.

Naseri pointed out that this artistic event is the result of months of hard work and collaboration among artists from around the globe. He stressed that the “Year Zero” exhibition is a culmination of various works collected within a short timeframe, primarily sourced from virtual platforms through direct cooperation with international artists.

Given the enthusiastic reception of this event, Naseri expressed hope that the “Year Zero” exhibition could extend to other cities in Iran and gain international exposure. He emphasized that showcasing these artworks in various countries could communicate a clear message about the current realities in the occupied territories to a global audience.

The ceremony also featured the unveiling of the book “Year Zero,” which compiles the artworks presented along with explanations about their context. This book aims to preserve the artistic documentation of this event and continue the narrative of artistic resistance.

The “Year Zero” exhibition stands as a testament to committed art during a time of crisis, created not merely for aesthetic purposes but for the sake of truth. This exhibition serves as both an artistic event and a living record of global sympathy for the oppressed Palestinian people, documenting historical atrocities that must not be forgotten.

The “Year Zero” exhibition will run until May 5.

Historically, Israel occupied Gaza in 1967 and dismantled its settlements in 2005. However, since 2007, Israel has imposed a land, sea, and air blockade on Gaza, rendering it the largest open-air prison.

On October 7, 2023, Palestinian resistance fighters initiated Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, launching a coordinated assault against the positions of the Israeli regime from the Gaza Strip. This operation marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, characterized by a series of attacks targeting military installations and settlements within the occupied territories.

The operation was described by its organizers as a response to the escalating violence against Palestinians and the dire conditions in Gaza, worsened by ongoing blockades and restrictions.

In swift retaliation, the Israeli regime conducted airstrikes, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 45,000 individuals, including more than 17,000 children. Furthermore, over 109,000 Palestinians have sustained injuries, and nearly two million have been displaced from their homes. This ongoing violence has led to a humanitarian crisis, significantly exacerbating the suffering of civilians in the region.
