In a recent statement, Turk expressed grave concern over the situation, stating, “We are receiving extremely disturbing reports of entire families – including women, children, and surrendered fighters – being killed.” The call for action is urgent, with Turk emphasizing the need for a swift end to the violence in northwestern Syria’s coastal regions.

He stated, “There must be prompt, transparent, and impartial investigations into all the killings and other violations.” Furthermore, he insisted that “those responsible must be brought to justice in accordance with international law. Groups terrorizing civilians must also be held accountable.”

The ongoing attacks, which have persisted for four days, have particularly targeted the Alawite community, leading to reports of at least 1,311 deaths, as per human rights organizations. Some groups have raised alarms that the actual death toll could be significantly higher, with many individuals still unaccounted for.

This surge in violence is considered one of the deadliest periods since the onset of Syria’s civil war in 2011. Reports indicate that government forces are employing genocidal tactics against the Alawite population, which constitutes approximately 20% of Syria’s demographic landscape. Turk highlighted disturbing accounts of summary executions that appear to be motivated by sectarianism, allegedly carried out by unidentified individuals, including members of the security forces associated with Syria’s caretaker authorities.

Eyewitness accounts describe militants patrolling the streets and ruthlessly killing anyone they encounter. One terrified resident shared, “There’s no water, no power, we’ve been trapped in our homes, terrified. Corpses are piling up in the streets. This is collective punishment.”
