Iran Launches First Infill Drilling Well Project in South Pars: A New Era for Energy Production

In a significant development for the energy sector, the Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) has successfully completed its first well in a major gas production initiative at the South Pars gas field. This project aims to sustain and enhance gas production, addressing challenges posed by natural reservoir depletion.

The Chief Executive of POGC, Touraj Dehghani, announced that Well No. 5 at the SPD12B platform in Phase 12 of the South Pars gas field is now operational. This milestone marks the beginning of a comprehensive 35-well infill drilling project designed to revitalize gas production in this critical area.

Key details about the project include:

  • Daily Production Capacity: Well No. 5 is capable of producing over 2 million cubic meters of rich gas each day.
  • Objective: The initiative aims to counteract the natural depletion of the reservoir at the SPD12B platform and restore production to its original design capacity.
  • Execution Strategy: The infill drilling project is divided into four distinct work packages, ensuring effective management and execution.

According to Dehghani, the successful drilling and completion of Well No. 5 were the result of dedicated efforts from specialists at both POGC and the PETROIRAN Development Company/International Drilling Company (DCI). The operations were conducted using the DCI-2 offshore drilling rig, as part of an integrated engineering, procurement, and drilling (EPD) contract.

The infill drilling project will be executed across 17 gas platforms within the South Pars field. Upon completion, it is anticipated to enhance the field’s daily gas production capacity by an impressive 36 million cubic meters.

Some important milestones in the project timeline include:

  1. Signing of the contract for the 35-well infill drilling project in November 2023.
  2. Commencement of the operational phase on July 9, 2024, at the SPD12B platform.
  3. Successful completion and integration of the first well after approximately eight months of drilling efforts.

This project is crucial for maintaining the functionality and output of the South Pars gas field, which is one of the largest natural gas fields in the world. The completion of Well No. 5 is a promising step towards ensuring that the field meets its production targets and contributes significantly to the energy needs of the region.

In summary, the successful drilling of Well No. 5 at the SPD12B platform represents a pivotal achievement for the Pars Oil and Gas Company and the broader energy sector. As the project progresses, it is expected to play a vital role in sustaining gas production, thereby meeting both local and international energy demands.

As the landscape of energy production evolves, initiatives like the South Pars infill drilling project demonstrate the commitment to leveraging technology and expertise to maximize resource utilization and maintain energy security.

This development not only highlights the importance of innovation in the oil and gas sector but also underscores the collaborative efforts of various organizations working together to achieve common goals. The successful execution of this project could serve as a model for future initiatives aimed at enhancing gas production efficiency and sustainability.
