Iran Awaits Ideal Circumstances for Authentic Negotiations, Says Strategic Council Leader

In a recent statement, Kamal Kharrazi, the Head of Iran’s Strategic Council of Foreign Relations, emphasized that the Islamic Republic is open to engaging in “true negotiations” with the West but is awaiting the right conditions to foster dialogue based on mutual respect and equality. This highlights Iran’s steadfast approach to international relations, particularly in the context of its ongoing discussions with the United States.

Kharrazi made these comments during a visit to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) headquarters on Wednesday. He asserted:

  • Commitment to Equality: “It is not consistent with the Iranian and revolutionary spirit to bow down to the excesses and tyranny of others.”
  • Need for Real Negotiations: “We will negotiate only if the conditions for real negotiations, i.e., based on the principle of equality and mutual respect, are provided.”
  • Current Situation: “Currently, there is no choice but the maximum patience.” He emphasized the necessity for the other side to show a genuine willingness to negotiate.
  • Critique of U.S. Approach: Kharrazi criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s tactics, describing them as “totalitarianism,” indicating a demand for compliance rather than collaboration.

He further stated that the conditions for negotiations with the U.S. are not yet conducive. The Americans must first demonstrate a commitment to negotiating on equal footing. Kharrazi remarked:

  • “Negotiations cannot be held in a state of tyranny because such conditions would imply surrender.”

Additionally, on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the prospect of direct talks with the U.S. while Trump continues his “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran. He stated during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov:

  • Clear Position on Nuclear Talks: “Iran’s position regarding nuclear talks is clear: we will not negotiate under pressure and sanctions.”

Trump has resumed his “maximum pressure” strategy, a policy he initiated during his first term after withdrawing the U.S. from the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
