Iran’s Foreign Minister Sounds Alarm on Global Threat Posed by Israeli Weapons of Mass Destruction

Iran’s commitment to peaceful nuclear activities has always been a focal point of international discussions, especially in the context of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). During a recent UN meeting on disarmament held in Geneva, Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized this commitment while addressing concerns about nuclear proliferation in the region.

“Iran has always conducted its peaceful nuclear activities under international supervision and within the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT),” Araghchi stated. He further elaborated on Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), underscoring that the nation has consistently worked to ensure the safety of its nuclear programs.

In contrast, Araghchi pointed out that “Israel, without being a member of any international convention or body related to nuclear arms control, freely pursues its nuclear programs without being checked.” This stark comparison raises significant questions about accountability and oversight in nuclear activities.

  • WMDs in Israel: Araghchi emphasized that Israel’s possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) undermines the vision of a nuclear-weapon-free Middle East, a proposal that dates back to 1974 when Iran first advocated for it.
  • Call for Accountability: He urged the international community to hold Israel accountable and compel it to join the NPT. This move would aim to eliminate its nuclear arsenal and place all nuclear activities under the comprehensive supervision of the IAEA.

Araghchi expressed deep concern regarding the threat posed by nuclear weapons, voicing the catastrophic human and environmental repercussions they bring. He called on the international community and the United Nations to prioritize nuclear disarmament as a pressing global issue.

He further stressed the necessity of establishing a comprehensive convention on nuclear weapons. According to Araghchi, it is imperative for the international community to hold nuclear-armed states accountable for adhering to their legal obligations. He remarked, “Failure to comply with legally binding obligations related to nuclear disarmament, especially under Article 6 of the NPT, will weaken the disarmament and arms control regime.”

The Iranian diplomat also highlighted the dangers of escalating armed conflicts, pointing out that many countries, under the guise of security, are investing massive resources into the production and stockpiling of weapons. This behavior perpetuates a vicious cycle of insecurity and violence, both regionally and globally.

Araghchi did not shy away from discussing the severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, where he condemned the actions of the Israeli regime. He characterized these actions as some of the most unprecedented and brutal, stating, “the genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli regime in the Gaza Strip have resulted in the destruction of the besieged enclave and the deaths of tens of thousands of people, mostly children, women, and the elderly.”

In conclusion, Araghchi’s statements at the UN meeting underline a critical need for the international community to reevaluate its stance on nuclear disarmament and accountability. The ongoing challenges posed by nuclear proliferation and armed conflict necessitate a concerted effort to foster peace and security in the region and beyond.

The call for comprehensive nuclear disarmament is not just a regional issue but a global imperative that affects all nations. As discussions continue, the hope remains that nations will come together to address these pressing concerns and work towards a safer world.
